❓ Frequently Asked Questions❓
How do I get started?
The best place to start is with a Capital Reserve Study or Building Condition Assessment. Our engineers evaluate the property’s current condition, identify immediate, mid-term, and long-term capital needs, and help develop a practical plan for budgeting and future improvements.
What if I already know what work needs to be done?
If you’ve already identified the necessary repairs, Merritt can prepare a scope-specific engineering investigation and report, complete with repair recommendations, budget estimates, and phased implementation strategies that align with your financial goals.
Can Merritt manage my project from start to finish?
Absolutely. Merritt provides a full range of engineering services under one roof—from inspections and investigations to engineering design, in-house expediting, bidding assistance, construction administration, and construction monitoring. Our integrated approach simplifies the process, improves communication, and provides a single point of accountability throughout the life of a project.
Do you provide expediting services?
Yes. Merritt Engineering offers in-house expediting services to help streamline the permitting and approval process. Our team coordinates filings with local building departments and regulatory agencies, helping clients navigate permits, approvals, and compliance requirements more efficiently while keeping projects on schedule.
How often do fire escapes need to be inspected?
New York State requires fire escape inspections to be performed every five (5) years by a qualified professional, with reports submitted to the appropriate local authority.
How often do parking garages need to be inspected?
Most parking garages subject to the New York State regulations require a Condition Assessment every three (3) years, performed by a qualified Professional Engineer and submitted to the local Authority Having Jurisdiction.
What types of projects does Merritt handle?
Merritt provides engineering services for nearly every aspect of a building, including:
- Full Building Envelope Systems
- Structural Engineering
- Parking Garages
- Roofing & Waterproofing
- Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP)
- HVAC Systems
- Lobby & Interior Renovations
- Sidewalks & Sidewalk Vaults
- Site Improvements & Paving

Can Merritt assist multiple properties within a portfolio?

Whether you need a single engineering assessment or a long-term capital planning strategy for multiple properties, our team can provide consistent service, responsive communication, and practical engineering solutions tailored to each building’s needs.
